More than Just a Fancy Feature: Why You Need a Backlit Keyboard Laptop
When laptops with backlit keyboards were initially launched in the marketplace, they were viewed as glamorous and attractive but, well, rather unnecessary.
Who needed all that fancy lighting on a keyboard when you could simply turn on all the lights in the office? But times have now changed, and computers with backlit keyboards are less an accessory, more a necessity.
Workplaces have shifted from stationary desks to people operating out of homes, public transport, and tents pitched up in the wilderness.
Owning a computer with a keyboard that lets you clearly see all the keys even in dim natural light can be the difference between being a go-getter and someone who can function only by day.
Many backlit keyboards now offer the options of adjusting the brightness and choosing your color scheme—a handy provision to add a dash of customization to your machine.
While such laptops have rapidly become a welcome choice for most audiences, you should certainly consider getting one if:
- You are a gamer: Gaming enthusiasts CANNOT do without a backlit keyboard, preferably with RGB lighting. Not only does it add razzmatazz to the proceedings but it is also a must-have for competitive gaming sessions where seeing your controls can mean all the difference between triumph and loss.
- You are a coder: Computer geeks tend to work at all times of the day and night, particularly if their job demands complicated nuggets of code within atrocious deadlines. Hitting the right key matters tremendously and can protect you from pesky software bugs.
- You are a creative professional: We are talking about writers, artists, architects, designers, and anyone who loves to create. A backlit keyboard is important to let you work uninhibited when creativity strikes, never mind the ambient lighting or lack thereof.

What You Must Look for in Laptops with Backlit Keyboards
So, let's say you have decided to get a laptop with a backlit keyboard. You will have a budget in mind as well as a processing configuration, display setting, battery backup, and possibly other specific needs tailored to your day. Be that as it may, you must keep an eye out for the following when you get home a laptop with light up keyboard:
- Type of laptop: Even though backlit keyboards have now become common, they are still not found easily in budget laptops. You're likely to see them in gaming computers, convertibles, and premium machines. Assess your needs carefully and don't get into a deal that, barring the keyboard, doesn't fit your requirement/price range. One of the most popular buys at present is a laptop with touch screen and backlit keyboard—a neat, convenient combination that doesn't cost a bomb.
- Adjustable lighting: A constant backlight that you cannot adjust may suit some but jar others. Consider if you need a laptop that lets you adjust the brightness manually or automatically does it for you based on the ambient light. Of course, some high-end gaming laptops let you completely own the keyboard and control every aspect (color and light per key). But you may not need to splurge on this feature unless you are a gamer.
- Keyboard design: Laptops with backlit keyboards typically commit to ergonomics as well, offering keyboards with a comfortable key travel distance and layout. You can choose between an island-style keyboard (more space around the keys) and a conventional, tightly packed arrangement. Likewise, take time out to consider if you're more comfortable with a low key-travel distance (1.5 to 2mm) or prefer more vertical distance (as you'll find in many gaming laptops). Ultimately, this remains a personal preference, but some users find it can impact their typing speeds and overall ease of use.
- Potential backlighting problems: Some laptops suffer from backlight bleeding—a problem that occurs when the keyboard hasn't been designed properly. You should check to ascertain that the backlight illuminates each key distinctly.
Time to Loosen those Purse Strings
We bet all those backlit keyboards and the fantastic laptops they are housed in fired up your thoughts and imagination. Have you arrived at a decision yet? Backlit keyboards are now available in machines spanning budgets, configurations, and features, so it has become easier to find one that fits you to a T.
If you are counting pennies, consider the cheap but efficient Acer Aspire 5 or the Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 5. For long, uber-reliable battery life, the Dell XPS 13 and the LG Gram 15 are your best bets. And then again, if you are eager to go all out on a cocktail of style, razzmatazz and performance, check out the latest Apple MacBook Pro, the newest Razer Blade 15 2020 or the Microsoft Surface Book 3.
A laptop with a backlit keyboard can unburden you from the need to hunt for a light source and thereby become your partner for efficient, comfortable work, wherever you go. The market now abounds in choices, so go ahead and take your pick.
There are two major English languagecomputer keyboardlayouts, the United States layout and the United Kingdom layout defined in BS 4822[1] (48-key version). Both are QWERTY layouts. Users in the United States do not frequently need to make use of the £ (pound) and € (euro) currency symbols, which are common needs in the United Kingdom and Ireland, although the $ (dollar sign) symbol is also provided as standard on UK and Irish keyboards. In other countries which predominantly use English as a common working language, such as Australia, Canada (English speaking parts), Pakistan, India, and New Zealand, the US keyboard is commonly used.
Windows keyboards[edit]
The UK variant of the Enhanced keyboard commonly used with personal computers designed for Microsoft Windows differs from the US layout as follows:
- The UK keyboard has 1 more key than the U.S. keyboard (UK=62, US=61, on the typewriter keys, 102 v 101 including function and other keys, 105 vs 104 on models with Windows keys)
- The Alt key to the right of the space bar is replaced by an AltGr key
- the extra key is added next to the Enter key to accommodate # (number sign) and ~ (tilde)
- The £ (pound sign) takes the place vacated by the number sign on the 3 key
- The ¬ (negation) takes the place vacated by tilde on the ` (grave accent) key
- ⇧ Shift+` produces ¬
- AltGr+` produces ¦ (broken bar, shown as a secondary symbol)
- € (euro sign) is produced by AltGr+4 and is shown as a secondary symbol
- @ and ' are swapped (to ⇧ Shift+' and ⇧ Shift+2, respectively)
- the key is moved to the left of the Z key (⇧ Shift+ still produces |)
- the Enter key spans two rows, and is narrower to accommodate the #/~ key
- AltGr+vowel produces the acute accent variant of that vowel as needed for Irish. Diacritics used in Scottish Gaelic and Welsh require the UK extended keyboard setting.
- Some UK keyboards do not label Backspace, Enter, Tab and Shift in words
Early versions of Windows handled both the differences between the two keyboards and the differences between American English and British English by having two English language options — a UK setting and a US setting. While adequate for users in the United States, United Kingdom, and Ireland, this solution caused difficulty in other English-speaking countries. In many English-speaking jurisdictions (e.g., Canada, Australia, the Caribbean nations, Hong Kong, Malaysia, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Singapore, New Zealand, and South Africa), orthography has traditionally conformed more closely to British English usage, while these countries have chosen to use the United States keyboard layout. People in these countries were as a result required to choose a system setting inconsistent with British English, thereby causing traditional British English to fall out of favour. This is particularly evident with spelling, where words such as 'colour' and 'centre' are flagged as being spelled incorrectly by word processing software when the operating system is set to the US setting.
However, in more recent editions of Windows, the number of 'settings' options was increased, allowing users to select the correct keyboard and dialect independently. For example, one is given a number of default options for locality that will usually correctly match dialect and keyboard. Further, even if the hardware keyboard layout does not match the region that was pre-selected, it can be changed without changing the regional setting.
International or extended keyboard layouts[edit]
Since the standard US keyboard layout in Microsoft Windows offers no way of inputting any sort of diacritic or accent, this makes it unsuitable for all but a handful of languages unless the US International layout is used. The US International layout changes the ` (grave), ~ (tilde), ^ (circumflex), ' (double quote, to make diaeresis), and ' (apostrophe, to make acute accent) keys into dead keys for producing accented characters: thus for example ' (release) a will produce á. The US International layout also uses the right alt (AltGr) as a modifier to enter special characters.[2]
The equivalent mapping for UK/Irish keyboards is called the 'UK Extended' layout which, if activated in settings, will allow the user to enter a wide variety of diacritics (such as grave accents) which are not accommodated by the standard UK/Irish layout. In particular, à,è,ì,ò,ù used in Scots Gaelic can be made (using `, release and then the vowel), the ŵ and ŷ used in Welsh (using AltGr+6 (^), release, then w etc.). Likewise, the Spanish and Portuguese letters ñ and õ can be made (using AltGr+# (~), release, then n etc).
For more specialized uses, there is a facility in Windows for users to create a customized layout that may match their needs more precisely.[3] Starcraft 2 osx torrent.
Apple Macintosh keyboards[edit]
The non-standard default U.S. layout on Apple Macintosh computers allows input of diacritical characters, whereby the entire MacRomancharacter set is directly available.[clarification needed]
Apple supplies a 'British' keyboard layout with the following differences:
Laptop Computers With Backlit Keyboard
- The # symbol is replaced by the £ symbol (as on PC keyboards); the # is available by pressing ⌥ Option+3
- More recent Apple British keyboards move the backquote/~ key to the left of the Z key and replace it with a section sign (§) and a plus-minus sign (±), respectively.
- The Enter key spans two rows and is shaped similarly to the Enter key of many ISO PC keyboards.
- The ' and @ keys are swapped.
Other keyboard layouts[edit]
Keyboard With Backlit Keys
Other operating systems can optionally re-map the keyboard layout or have different modifier keys (for example the Amiga keyboard has 'A' modifier keys and BBC Micro or Acorn keyboards often had a 'Shift Lock' as well as a 'Caps Lock').
Under Unix/Linux the 'Windows' key is often called the 'Super' key and can be re-mapped by users for specific functionality but in most programs by default does nothing.
Some older Unix/Linux software, such as Emacs, uses the left Alt key as a 'Meta' key, which harks back to older MIT or LISP computers.[4]
Chrome OS uses the US and UK Windows layouts, except that the Caps-Lock key is labelled with a magnifying glass (🔍) and by default acts as a web search key (there is an option in Settings to revert it to convention). The function-key row is also differently labelled. The UK-extended layout for Chrome OS is provided by a Chrome add-on, and provides ready access to a substantially greater (than Windows) repertoire of precomposed characters for western, central and eastern European (Latin alphabet) languages.
Dvorak layouts[edit]
There are also Dvorak Layouts for each region.
