While running around your island in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, you will find that the most troublesome thing you need to do beyond capturing new fish and bugs is keeping track of your inventory space. You may feel like there's never enough space in your pockets. Luckily, you can eventually unlock the ability to have storage space.
Unfortunately, you won't be able to actively build additional storage space or a chest to hold all of your items. You need to wait until you can upgrade your home on your island to have access to a brand new one in your residence. There are options to increase your carrying space, though, making it easier to roam around the world to carry most of the things you want to take with you and return to your island if you visit somewhere else. While in your home, press the right side of the D-pad to open your storage space and open up your inventory, placing the items you want to keep in your home safely.

Many players are also discovering you don't need to optimize storage space anymore. All you have to do is place down any item you don't want to hold on the ground, and you can come back for it later. Nothing happens to it, and it remains safe until you need it again. You might want to keep your items near your tent, so you don't lose them, but it makes it much easier than having to build or construct chests consistently.
